More new treatments for mesothelioma are being tested and tried daily. Scientists also try the conventional methods of treatment like radiation, chemotherapy, and surgery in combination to try to come up with the fastest and most accurate treatment for mesothelioma. Below are a few of the new treatments that are being tried at this point.
Immunotherapy is one new treatment being tested at this time. Immunotherapy uses the patients own immune system to fight the mesothelioma. Immunotherapy consists of using substances found in the immune system to counteract the growth of the tumor.
Some substances that have been used in laboratory studies are interferon and interleukin-2. These substances have been found effective in laboratory studies but in those with malignant mesothelioma and there clinical trials the immunotherapy has not been effective.
Another new mesothelioma treatment is called heat therapy. Heat therapy works in the way that it heats the chemotherapy agents before they are injected. When these chemicals are heated before injection it seems to kill more of the tumor cells. This new mesothelioma treatment is also known as chemo hyperthermia and has shown good results in those with malignant mesothelioma. Gene therapy is a new mesothelioma treatment that some believe to be a big key in future studies of mesothelioma. Gene therapy involves manipulating the genes involved in the tumor into a virus, such as the common cold, and then using antiviral drugs or your own immune system to destroy the cells.
Studies are still being conducted on this therapy. So far, this treatment has been effective for early stages of malignant mesothelioma and other types of tumors.
Another type of new mesothelioma treatment being tested in various studies is called Photodynamic Therapy. Photodynamic Therapy consists of injecting light sensitive molecules in the pleural space before surgery. When the surgery is done light is put directly on the molecules, thus killing the tumor cells. This study has not shown improved survival but studies are still being done to try this treatment.
Other new studies are done daily and many patients try clinical trials. Clinical trials are research studies that are done to collect information for new drugs or devices. Clinical trials can be the best treatment in some instances. Clinical trials are different tests done by physicians who have advanced knowledge. A Clinical trial could very easily prove to be the cure to mesothelioma in the future.
